Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

DEI Philosophy

Christmas On The Bay™ (COTB) is a welcoming space where everyone can know they belong.

To be a welcoming space COTB has to be true to the views of DEI: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

So, what is DEI and how does COTB reflect the beliefs of DEI?

Diversity is understanding that each person is unique and seeing their individual differences.

Christmas On The Bay™ values each individual for their distinctiveness. This distinctiveness is respected through understanding and embracing individual differences.

Equity is about everyone being treated fairly and receiving the support they need and when they need it throughout the market space.

Christmas On The Bay™ ensures equity by removing barriers to participation within the event.

Inclusion ensures equal access and opportunities, getting rid of discrimination and intolerance.

Christmas On The Bay™ strives to make COTB a welcoming, safe space, and creates a sense of belonging for all. Everyone is encouraged to participate and contribute.

COTB endeavors to weave DEI into every aspect of the Market experience from the physical layout, entertainment, volunteers, vendors, special events, activities and marketing. We reference the DEI Resource/Guide which brings together the latest research, best practices and resources on DEI. We also undertake a Welcoming Space Audit to help us continually improve.

COTB endeavors to look at the planning process and decisions with a DEI lens.

Awareness and training are important for all connected with COTB. We do this through DEI information sheets for our volunteers, vendors and entertainers. In November of this year, we held a training session for volunteers on DEI. We feature information on DEI practices through our newsletters as well.

COTB established “Georgie Presents” as a platform to present a dedicated event to support DEI in a tangible way.

COTB is a member of the Grey Bruce Local Immigration Council and the Belonging Sub-Committee.

Owen Sound and Sydenham Optimist Club’s  Diversity Forest are set to return bigger and better! Stay tuned for details.

Hello Banners were created by COTB as a sign of welcome for residents and visitors of diverse cultures. The banners are available for use by different community groups and events such as the Meaford Scarecrow Invasion, Summerfest and Canada Day celebrations to name a few.

A Communication Banner with pictograms showing people’s needs at special events is also available to community groups.
